Garbage Collections, Electronics Recycling & Seasonal Debris

The Borough’s sanitation company is Interstate Waste Services (IWS) at 866-342-5497, and they are responsible for the pick-up of sanitation and recycling. Any issues with these pick-ups, or if a special pick-up needs to be arranged, please contact IWS directly. Please call the Department of Public Works at 201-592-3632 if you have any general questions.

BULK ITEMS (FURNITURE & Mattresses)

All residents are allotted a bulk garbage day, which takes place on the second garbage pick-up day of the week.  Two items (maximum) of bulk may be left out on this day for pick-up; anything more will not be taken. Apartment buildings may have different rules for disposing of trash, recycling and bulk items so please check with your management office.

WHITE GOODS (METAL/APPLIANCES )

For the disposal of refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, etc., residents are required to call Interstate Waste Services (IWS) directly and schedule a pick-up of these items.

Electronics & Rechargeable batteries  RECYCLING

Electronics/Computers can be brought to the Department of Public Work Facility at 530 Jane Street for disposal. This is electronics and computers only (no appliances, A/C, vacuums or microwaves).

The Rechargeable Battery bin is located next to the Electronics bin and it is for the recycling of rechargeable batteries only. The disposal of any other types of batteries are not permitted. Violators caught dumping trash or unapproved items in the DPW dumpsters will be fined.

SEASONAL PICK-UPS

SPRING/SUMMER LAWN DEBRIS PICK-UP

From April through October, Interstate Waste Services will collect lawn debris every Monday. Branches must be tied smaller than 4 feet. They will not accept plastic bags. Lawn bags or paper bags only, please.

Leaf Pick-up

The DPW will collect leaves weekly starting in October through December.  Fort Lee encourages all residents to bag the leaves in your yard.  Please leave your collections at your curb for easy pick-up. They will not accept plastic bags. Lawn bags or paper bags only, please.  Interstate Waste Services (IWS) resumes the collection of leaf/lawn debris every Monday beginning in April to October.

CHRISTMAS TREE COLLECTION

From Christmas through mid-February, please leave Christmas trees at the curb, free of plastic bags, décorations/lights or tree stands. If you live in a high-rise or apartment complex, please follow the instructions of your management.

As a reminder, there is no garbage or recycling dumping allowed at the Department of Public Works (DPW) or any other Borough property. Curbside pick-up only is allowed.

HAZARDOUS MATERIAL DISPOSAL

Please be mindful that certain materials cannot be disposed of during routine waste collection and may need to be properly taken care of by the Bergen County Utilities Authority. Visit their website at https://www.bcua.org/ or call 201-641-2552. The BCUA has scheduled waste collection events to conveniently dispose of hazardous materials. Click here for a schedule.

PAPER SHREDDING

Why shred your important documents? Consumer fraud and identity theft are becoming an epidemic in our communities so to raise awareness, promote privacy protection and properly dispose of these sensitive papers, we shred them!  In doing so, you are also effortlessly reducing your harmful footprint on the environment.

Fort Lee coordinates two shredding events a year - in the Spring and in the Autumn. Our next shredding event this year will take place on October 7th, sponsored by the Bergen County Utilities Authority. Bring your materials to be shredded between 9am-1pm at the Fort Lee Recreation Center at 1500 Stillwell Avenue. Free paper shredding is for local residents only (proof of Fort Lee residency needed). Limit four bags per household, please.
