The Fort Lee Mayor and Council's Advisory Committee for Individuals with Disabilities was established in 1993. It is comprised of 17 members including a Council liaison, Borough Department Heads, residents with disabilities, and other interested residents of Fort Lee.
The Committee identifies needs and problems, advises and helps develop services and programs, and recommends solutions to meet the needs of Fort Lee’s residents with all type of disabilities.
The Committee has worked to improve accessibility throughout the Borough. Among its accomplishments are the following:
Revision of snow removal ordinance to make sidewalks, streets, and parking more accessible
Revision of Municipal Building code to eliminate permit fees for alterations which improve accessibility
Sensitivity training sessions for all Borough employees
Resource racks containing literature about disabilities
Informational town wide meetings for persons with disabilities
Participation in Heritage Day and Fort Lee’s Annual Health Fair
The goal of the Fort Lee Mayor and Council's Advisory Committee for Individuals with Disabilities is to encourage the ability of individuals with disabilities to fully participate in all aspects of community life. This mission is achieved through educating and advising the local government on the creation of accessible and barrier free services and facilities in Fort Lee.
The Committee is a member of the National Organization on Disability's Community Partnership Program (CPP), and a participant in New Jersey Transit's Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Task Force Committee.
